The Jurassic Coast One Day Workshop

2010 Course Dates: 27th Feb, 28th Feb, 13th Nov, 14th Nov.

The Course:  This is an intensive one day workshop designed to improve your own photographic skills, vision and style.  There will be excursions to a variety of locations along the coast, each offering different subjects to photograph.  I’ll be on hand to give individual guidance in the field and as the group size will be limited to 3 guests, there will be plenty of ‘one to one’ time.  There will also be tutorials and demonstrations to help improve your understanding of composition and light.

The Area:  The Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site stretches from Exmouth in the west to Studland near Swanage in the East.  The course will be based on the section of coast either side of Lyme Regis though the exact locations will depend on both weather and tide.

Accommodation:  As this is a one day course, you will no doubt want to make your own accommodation choices i.e. levels of luxury and whether to make a weekend of it etc, so I’ll leave that to you.  As the dawn shoot will be based in Lyme Regis, you may wish to stay here for maximum time in bed! There are several accommodation options to cater for all budgets.  This tourist information website may be helpful:

Breakfast: If there is one drawback to the otherwise noble art of landscape photography, it is that it requires you to be out working at the exact time that most normal people are sitting down to breakfast. There are a few options open to us depending on the weather: If it is fine, you'll no doubt want to stay out and continue photographing in the good light in which case, I'll pack a hamper full of croissants and a couple of thermos flasks for hot drinks and we can have breakfast in the field. If it is raining however, you'll probably want some indoor respite by now in which case we can all head for the excellent Town Mill Bakery on Coombe Street in Lyme Regis (www.townmillbakery.com) and chat about photography over a hot coffee and the best toast you'll ever have!

Ladram Bay

What to bring:

Camera equipment. Bring whatever you use, be it film or digital.  I only ask that you are familiar with your own equipment.  The only other essential piece of kit for landscape photography is a tripod.
All weather clothing.  We cannot control the weather but I believe there is always a good shot to be had, whatever the weather.  If it is pouring with rain, we may not be spending as much time outdoors but we’ll certainly be popping out for a couple of shoots so it is important to make yourselves comfortable and to keep your camera dry.  Bring an umbrella or thick plastic bag for your camera.  Sturdy shoes, walking boots or wellies would also be ideal as we’ll be walking a little way over pebble beaches.
